For anyone who is interested in the history and development of Ullapool, Achiltibuie and the Coigach peninsular I came across a couple of interesting sites this week.
The first comes with a hat tip to Loch Broom Blethers in the Ross-shire Journal and is a very long thesis from and American student, Michael Jetter-Boldt entitled “The Greatest Improvement of Any Country: Economic Development in Ullapool & the Highlands 1786 – 1835“. It’s a 200 page PDF and examines the initial slow development of Ullapool in the 18th century as a result of poor communication links and roads. An interesting read for a wet day..
The second is again a very long and detailed profile of the census records, tennant & militia lists for Achilitibuie also dating back to the early part of the 18th century. I have a relative who started to trace back my family’s history in the village & wrote about this in a previous post. When I get some time I will try to cross-reference the 2.
