MV Isle of Lewis from Jubilee, originally uploaded by Michael Maclean.
On a clear day in Achiltibuie you can clearly see out beyond the Summer Isles to the Hebrides. Usually, after the trip up from London the last thing I want to do when getting to Greenhill is spend more time travelling but the Hebrides have always held a fascination as I see the large CalMac ferries passing out through Loch Broom.
While the trip out to Lewis from Ullapool looks to take nearly 3 hours it is possible to either do the trip as a non-landing passenger or even to do a day trip which allows a good 6 hours on the island.
Full details of the timetables and costs can be found here. It looks pretty reasonable – especially if the weather is good and you can see some of the wildlife along the way.
Maybe next time we’re up for a bit we’ll try it.
