Arts and crafts in Wester Ross

Mary King - artist Achiltibuie

(Storm over the Summer Isles by Mary King)

The area around Achiltibuie and Ullapool has a very active arts scene. There seem to be lots of artists and craft workers who are drawn to the area. If you visit, I’m sure you’ll understand why.

An Talla Solais in Ullapool is the visual arts hub for the region. On their interesting website you can find details of local artists and exhibitions.

On the road out of Ullapool you will also find the Rhue Studio, home of contemporary landscape painter James Hawkins. His work seems to take the local landscape back to its volcanic roots.

Bridge House Arts in Ullapool offer a range of courses for up to 7 students at a time.

In Achiltibuie the Picture Shack gallery features the work of Mary King alongside other local artists. For me Mary’s pictures best capture the feeling of being in Coigach.

If you are interested in exploring the creative depths of the region further the Crafts & Crafts People blog also showcases some local designers, events and exhibitions across Wester Ross.
